What Is Snus

Snus (pronounced ‘snoos’) is sold loose or in pouches. It is made from tobacco that has been manufactured into a moist ‘mass’ that is stored in the pouch. They are used in exactly the same way that you use a nicotine pouch.

Snus has been around for more than 200 years and became popular in the 19th century. It became particularly popular in Sweden. It was here that the original dry Snus was developed into a moist substance and it was also in Sweden that the first Snus pouches were developed. To this date Snus remains the most common way of using nicotine in Sweden.

Regulatory Environment: Snus regulations are different in different countries. Snus is subject to stringent quality control requirements and is widely available throughout Scandinavia. On the flip side, due to public health and addiction concerns, numerous nations either outright ban it or place strict regulations on its sale and marketing.

Unfortunately the EU decided to ban Snus in all its member states with the exception of Sweden. Post Brexit the UK has maintained its ban on the sales of Snus.

Given that Snus contains tobacco, it follows that it also contains the constituents associated with tobacco use. Studies have shown that Snus can be harsh on your gums and contribute to dental problems. There is still some disagreement on the health effects of snus, despite the fact that it may be less harmful than smoking. Because snus consumption reduces exposure to toxic combustion byproducts, research suggests that it may entail lesser health risks than smoking. Nevertheless, worries about its addictive qualities and its links to dental health problems continue.

Nicotine pouches on the other hand do not contain any tobacco at all. Instead of tobacco, nicotine pouches contain a large number of very small granules, typically made from cellulose. These granules absorb the nicotine and any added flavourings. Combined they make up the contents of the nicotine pouch. The granules ‘hold onto’ the nicotine and flavourings until the saliva from your mouth activates them and releases them into your body.

Nicotine pouches have a number of benefits when compared to Snus:

  1. While Snus will stain your teeth yellow, nicotine pouches do not discolour your teeth at all.

  2. Nicotine pouches come in a variety of nicotine strengths allowing you to regulate your nicotine intake in line with your needs as you progress through your quitting journey.

  3. Nicotine pouches come in a variety of flavours, providing you with variety – something that has proven to increase success as you work to quit.
